Dr. Gene Edworthy graduated as an Optometrist from the University of Waterloo. He joined his father’s practice in downtown Calgary, and built on the reputation of the clinic, doing clinical trials on new contact lenses, doing sports vision research and teaching in the faculty of kinesiology of the University of Calgary, and lecturing on new technologies such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), which the Edworthy Vision Centre was the first optometric clinic in Canada to acquire and use clinically.

A community leader, Dr. Edworthy has served on the boards of the Canadian Olympic Committee, the Canadian Olympic Foundation, the Canadian Sport Institute Calgary, Winsport, EducationMatters, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Fort Calgary Preservation Society, and more. He has provided many years of service providing eye care to people of developing nations through the charity Canadian Vision Care.

Dr. Gene continues to enjoy practicing Optometry. He believes two things set our clinic apart; the advanced level of technology, and the fact that our doctors enjoy explaining what they find to our patients, so they understand their ocular conditions and their treatment options.

Gene’s personal life has been multi-faceted. He has competed for Canada as a luge athlete, been a pilot since age 19, he applied for the Canadian Astronaut Program and did zero gravity flight training. He has participated in seven Olympic Games in official capacities. He continues to perform his trumpet with the Calgary Stampede’s Band of Outriders. He enjoys skiing, hiking and advancing his understanding of himself and the world around him.

Dr. Edworthy is happy to merge the Edworthy Vision Centre with FYi doctors. It allows him to continue to provide the patient care that he loves for many years to come, while being supported by colleagues with a similar patient focused philosophy.
