Dr Adriana Filippone was born and raised in Sudbury. She became interested in the field of optometry after her first visit to the family optometrist, Dr. Leopold Lacourciere. Sitting at the back of the class in high school, Dr. Filippone discovered herself needing to squint to read notes on the blackboard properly. Her new glasses and the clear vision they provided changed her life forever. After graduating from high school, she completed one post secondary year of education at the University of Waterloo in 1979 and was then accepted into the four year professional optometry program. She successively completed the program and graduated in 1983 with a Doctor of Optometry degree. Coincidentally, she received the “The Leopold Lacourciere Award for General Proficiency” in the first year of its inception. Dr. Filippone is a member of the Canadian Association of Optometrists and the Ontario Association of Optometrists. She has been a Clinical Faculty Member of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine since 2008, where she has lectured to second year medical students about the "special sense’ of vision. She enjoys seeing patients of all ages and is passionate about delivering the best eye care possible. A self-proclaimed "foodie", she loves to host dinners for family and friends. Having grown up near the beauty of Sudbury’s finest lakes and unique terrain, she takes every opportunity to spend time outdoors. She has been happily married for 30 years and has two wonderful children.
In 1989, Dr. Cousineau graduated with honours with both a Bachelor of Sciences degree (B. Sc.) and a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from the University of Waterloo. She received the prestigious Ontario Association of Optometrists award for Excellence in Patient Management. After graduation from the University of Waterloo, Dr. Cousineau continued with her studies, acquiring a residency in Pediatric Optometry at the University of Houston. There, she was under the tutelage of very prestigious names in binocular vision, vision perception and pediatric ophthalmology. Her training focused on the vision and ocular health of infants and young children. Dr. Cousineau enjoys assessing people of all ages. In 1994, Dr. Cousineau also obtained her therapeutic accreditation from Northeastern State University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1994, she went on to successively meet all the requirements of a 102 hour course in the “Treatment and Management of Ocular Disease” provided by Northeastern State University College of Optometry, which included an externship in Tahlequah Oklahoma. This certified her to diagnose and treat eye disease. Over the years, she has enjoyed refreshing these skills by participating in countless hours of continuing education from around the world. She is a proud member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists as well as a member of the Canadian Association of Optometrists and is pleased to be a part of the Eye See Eye Learn program which raises awareness of the importance of eye exams and visual health assessments prior to starting school. On a personal level Dr. Cousineau has four wonderful children. She is an active musician at her church and sits on the executive of the Club Richelieu Féminin de Sudbury. She also enjoys cross-fit training.
